Kingdom Mothers
You are right, I don’t know the first thing about being a mom, but I can speak from a place of witnessing one of the greatest moms in the world live out the title in her everyday life. My wife Katherine nurtures our children when they are down in the dumps, she cares for them when they are sick, and she fills their bodies with delicious meals and ensures they grow up in a clean environment. She is the glue of our family and I’m not sure how our home and family would function without her.
Even though I didn’t deserve it, God has blessed me with a graceful, patient, tender-hearted woman who loves the Lord and honors him by loving and raising our children. She teaches them how to handle their emotions, steward their blessings, and speak life on a daily basis. She inspires me and motivates me to be a better father and I know God has given me her to multiply His Goodness.
What I’d like you to take away today, is the reality that Mother’s Day has a deep spiritual dimension.
Mary, the mother of Jesus, is the greatest of all mothers (Right after my wife of course).
Jokes aside, Motherhood has always been a sacred and noble vocation, but Mary raised it to an even greater stature when she became the Mother of God. As the mother who is “blessed among women” (Lk 1:42), Mary gives us the clearest and most inspiring picture of what the ideal mother should look like, and every Christian mother would be wise to take her cues from the one who excelled at motherhood like none other.
Mary was “full of grace,” or put more simply, God lived within her. Because as we know, God is full of grace. This came naturally because of her upbringing. St. Ann was Mary’s mother, and the elder Ann taught her young daughter to be loving and kind, attentive to God’s Word, and obedient to God’s will. With such a firm foundation, Mary was so favorably disposed to God that when the archangel Gabriel appeared to her and said, “You will bear a son,” with deep faith, she trustingly replied, “Let it be done to me according to your word” (Lk 1:31,38). Every Christian mother loves God with all her heart and responds favorably whenever God calls.
As we know Mary got pregnant by the power of the Holy Spirit (Luke 1:35) and the Miracle was in motion. Shortly after, she offered a magnificent prayer to God, which is one of the most beautiful prayers found in all of scripture (Luke 1:46-55).
She then birthed Jesus in a manger and immediately wrapped Jesus in swaddling clothes, caring for his physical needs. A few weeks later she consecrated Jesus to God, acknowledging God’s plan for her Son. As the years progressed, she took her son to the synagogue each week and to the temple in Jerusalem once a year for Passover. Mary’s church attendance was consistent, giving Jesus and James a spiritual foundation to build their ministries.
The gospel says that Jesus was obedient to Mary (Lk 2:51), which implies that Mary was firm and disciplined with her Son. As I’ve witnessed in my own house and from many great mothers in my circles of influence: Christian mothers do not let their children do whatever they want, but have high standards for Christian conduct, and insist upon them.
When Jesus was crucified, Mary stood at the foot of the Cross and suffered with him (John 19:25). She never abandoned her child, even during adulthood, particularly when things were at their worst. This sort of enduring love is exemplary for Christian mothers. Children get into trouble, sometimes for the right reasons, sometimes not, as children or as adults. Mothers like Mary stand with their children throughout life, especially when things go bad, even if they are unable to alter the course of tragic events, to offer love and support in whatever way they can.
Let us learn from Mary, that motherhood is a full-time job that lasts until we are called home to be with Him in Heaven.
Let us never underestimate the role of mothers.
Let us never under-appreciate all they do for us.
Let us always show honor, love, and respect for the mothers who have an influence on our lives.
